It is surely no accident; therefore, that many of the great contributions to human medicine and science where made by men whose research was on veterinary medicine. The names of these veterinarians are indelibly inscribed in the History of Modern Medicine.

AUGUSTE CHAUVEAU:
Cardiac catheterization a procedure so important today in human cardiac surgery, was introduced in the 19th century by the French Veterinarian, J.B.Auguste and Claude Bernard.
COOMBS:
‘Coomb’s test’ devised by the British Veterinary scientist has found practical application in human medicine and has proved especially valuable in diagnosis of chronic brucellosis.
CRAWFORD:
The famous discoverer of bird malaria caused by Plasmodium gallinaceum. This led to the evaluation of anti-malarial drugs for the use in human medicine.
DANIEL ELMER SALMON:
Father of disease eradication. Pioneer in public health practice and medical research Discoverer of killed vaccines and of the ‘Salmonellae’ Experimental immunologist, epidemiologist, administrator founder of the Bureau of Animal industry. His findings proved to be the foundation of modern work on preventive inoculation of human beings against various diseases like Cholera, Typhoid and Plague.
EDUARDOPERRONCITO:
His findings opened to the discovery of hook worm, an etiology of epidemics of anemia among miners and other workers. He was the discoverer of male fern extract as the first reasonably effective treatment for hook worm disease in human beings.
ELLERMAN AND BANG:
They were the first to demonstrate that the Cancer (Leukosis) is caused by virus.
FRANK BENESCH:
Epidural anesthesia was introduced by Frank Benesch. An Austrian Veterinary Professor.
FREDERIC BRAUELL:
The veterinarian and Professor at Dorpot was the first to observe the anthrax bacillus in a human being. Before Koch’s work, Brauell also transmitted anthrax from man to sheep and horse to horse by the inoculation of blood. He was also among the first to observe red blood cell agglutination in diseases.
GUERIN:
B.C.G – The most successful immunizing agent against Tuberculosis in human beings were developed by Guerin with Calmette. Though it has been prepared from Mycobacterium bovis, it has no significant role in the control of Bovine Tuberculosis.
HARRY A GORMAN:
He developed the first functional complete hip joint prosthesis and helped to adopt it for use in man.
JACOB NUFER:
The Swiss veterinarian in 1500 A.D. performed the first caesarian section upon a living woman.
OTTO STADER:
The American veterinarian designed the first single, compact device to combine mechanical reduction of fractures with immobilization.
TABOURIN:
The French veterinarian developed one of the first hypodermic syringes and was one of the first person to administer drugs parenterally.

One of the famous cricketers and past captain of West Indies cricket team was a veterinarian.

The international Evangelist and Good Singer who belongs to World Vision was a graduate of Madras Veterinary College.
WILLIAM HAYCUCK:
He advocated Veterinary Homeopathy as a protest against the violent practice of bleeding, purging etc, in 1852 A.D
WILLIAM YOUATT AND WILLIAM PERCIVALL
They established ‘The Veterinarian’, the first English Veterinary Journal in 1828 A.D
