THE SOUNDS OF SPECIES

    THE SOUNDS OF SPECIES

One day , after coming from school my daughter was telling me about a session during which one of her classmates asked a doubt to her teacher. The teacher said that she was not aware of all those things and told the students that only my daughter’s dad would know all these answers.
My daughter asked me, “We say that a dog barks and a cat meows. What  do we call the sound of a Hippo or a dolphin?”
Actually I did not know. Unfortunately people expect that veterinarians to know everything about animals. It is not really possible. These things are not taught in veterinary schools. It goes with an individual’s quest and interest.
I could not get the answers in those days. Today we are fortunate to live in an era of information technology. When we were students we were only the consumers of information but today’s students are the producers and publishers of information. They are rich content developers.
High speed Internet access, which was only a blip on the radar 5 years ago, is as common as a laptop. The Internet has changed the way we find information, the way we absorb information, and the way we regurgitate information and I want to share such information with you here.

That's wonderful. It reminds me of those old lists of collective nouns -- the proper name for a group of animals, e.g. a troop of kangaroos, a school of fish, a pride of lions. Those are the ones that have made it into everyday speech, but there are more outlandish ones as you dig deeper; a smack of jellyfish, a crash of rhinos, a clowder of cats (but a kindle of kittens), a shrewdness of apes. And once you start getting into the bird kingdom, it just gets crazy: an unkindness of ravens, an exaltation of larks.
